Apple’s ‘Activation Lock’ tool helps users identify whether their iOS device are safely protected. It is an added feature in iCloud website that allows you to carry out such a task. When you enable Find My iPhone/iPad, the activation lock is enabled to protect your iOS device from any kind of misuse when it is stolen or lost.
Activation lock ensures that datas/contents on your iPhone are not erased. It is Apple’s way of safeguarding iOS devices against theft, loss and malicious use. This is a great form of protection but one of the downsides is that customers who purchase an second hand iOS device from a retailer might be unable to use it because the previous owner failed to disable Find My iPhone/iPad.
Therefore, when selling your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to someone else, make sure that the activation lock has been disabled first and that the device is ready for the next user. In this article, we show you can use the Activation Lock tool by Apple to check this.
How to check the Activation Lock status
Step 1: Open the browser on your PC/Mac and navigate to this website.
Step 2: Once the page is loaded, you are required to enter your iOS device’s IMEI or serial number in the field provided. If you don’t know your IMEI or serial number, you can find it by going to Settings -> General -> About.
Step 3: Once you have identified your IMEI or serial number, enter it in the first field as shown below. Additionally, you also need to fill in the verification code for security purposes. Now, click Continue.
This is it. If the activation lock is enabled, then you will receive a message “Activation Lock: On” and vice-versa. If the Activation Lock is marked as On then you need to make sure it is disabled before you sell the device to another person. Or if you’re a buyer, you have to make sure this is disabled before purchasing the device.
Additionally, the IMEI or serial number provided identifies which iOS device it belongs to and displays the information so that you can verify that the device is legit.
