Here’s how you can start Mac in safe mode to troubleshoot any issues that you’re facing.

Just like windows, macOS also comes with a Safe Mode feature that is designed for troubleshooting purposes. When you boot your Mac in Safe Mode, all third-party programs and hardware drivers are disabled and only the extensions that are required for booting are loaded.

Safe mode is usually used to troubleshoot the problems that your Mac is facing or when it isn’t booting properly. If you don’t know how to start your Macbook in Safe Mode, the step-by-step guide below shows you how to do it.

How to Start Mac in Safe Mode

Step 1: If your Mac is turned on, switch it off by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu.

  • If for some reason you are unable to choose this option, you can force a shut down by holding the Power key for a few seconds until your Mac turns off completely.

Step 2: Switch on your Mac by pressing the Power key.

Step 3: As soon as you hear the startup sound while your Mac is booting, press and hold the Shift key.

Note: If you use the FileVault feature to encrypt the startup disk, release the Shift key when you’re prompted to enter your password to unlock the disk.

Step 4: Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo screen with a progress bar, or the login screen.

Your Mac has now booted successfully into Safe Mode. Proceed with logging into your Mac and troubleshooting any issues that you’re facing. If you’re not in Safe Mode, perform the steps above again.

How to Exit Safe Mode on Mac

To exit Safe Mode, you have to shut down your Mac the way you normally do:

  • Open the Apple menu and choose Shut Down.
  • Once turned off, switch it on by pressing the Power key (do not hold the Shift key this time).

Leaving Safe Mode sometimes takes a long time, so do not interrupt the process. Avoid forcing shut down by holding the Power button.

That’s all you need to do to enter or leave safe mode in Mac. If you face any issues, let us know in the comments below.
